August 21, 2012. At an extraordinary session of the Kherson Regional Council, a decision was made to recognize the Russian language regional.
Most deputies voted for making such a decision.
Its adoption was influenced by the data provided by the regional management of statistics, according to which almost half of the residents of the region consider themselves Russian.
Previously, such a decision was approved by deputies of other regions. In particular – Kharkov, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhya, Odessa and Dnipropetrovsk regional councils.
According to decisions made, the Russian language will be officially used in the work of state authorities, along with Ukrainian.
On the contrary, the people’s deputies of the Ternopil Regional Council appealed to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. They, in turn, consider the law on the foundations of the state language policy that does not meet the norms of the Constitution. In their statement, deputies refer to p.10 of the Constitution, which states that the state language of the country is Ukrainian and ask to recognize the above law not constitutional. For this appeal, most people’s deputies also voted.
